We are devoting our July event to a celebration in music and film of the great radical spirit of Spain. It was the occupation of Madrid’s Puerta del Sol in May 2011 that kicked off the resistance to austerity in Europe, and since then Spanish social networks around the M-15 protests continue to inspire hope, just like the Spanish Social Revolution of 1936.
Singer-songwriter Pilar Lopez will present Libres; a performance about the 1936 Revolution which includes folk songs from the period and some original compositions inspired by those times, and also brings news of recent developments in the M-15 movement and the current situation in Spain.
We will also be re-screening the 1986 documentary De Toda La Vida (All Our Lives) which tells the story of the Mujeres Libres (free women), the movement of anarcho-feminists that emerged from the 1936 Revolution, and showing an interview with veteran Spanish radical philosopher Jose Luis Sampedro who reflects on the future. So join us for what we hope will be an enjoyable and inspirational evening of Spanish music, film and food!
